How To Install A Mini-Split

With more and more do-it-yourselfers out there than ever before, you may be thinking about installing a mini-split yourself to save a few bucks. In a city like Toronto and the GTA, saving money is pretty rare, so it’s always a bonus when you can do something yourself instead of hiring someone to handle the job. From our 30 years of experience though, this is usually a bad idea when it comes to installing a mini-split or any other HVAC system in your home. Here’s why:

Things To Consider Before You Install A Mini-Split

Heading to Home Depot or Rona isn’t the best way to get started here. Sure, you might be able to make a bunch of repairs around the house, but an HVAC system is a bit more complicated.

One thing you’ll want to consider is how big your home is before you install a mini-split. Remember, a mini-split is all about spot heating and cooling. This is typically great for controlling the temperature of a single room or given area of a home. However, if you’re planning to install a mini-split in hopes of it helping keep a larger home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, you’re in for a disappointment.

Another thing would be the type of mini-split you’ll need. Different models have different features, shelf-lives, and other subtle pros and cons to consider. There are many credible brands to choose from, but knowing these subtle differences could help maximize the performance of your mini-split in your home specifically.

Finally, you’ll need to find a spot in your home to install your mini-split. You’ll need an area usually near a window, with plenty of space outside to install the compressor. After all, the compressor pulls in air and feeds it to the condenser indoors to heat or cool the air accordingly. You can’t have one without the other, so not installing one of these perfectly could mean disaster for how your mini-split performs.

Now that you know a bit more about mini-splits, you can see why it’s not recommended you handle the install yourself. Good news is, there are plenty of professionals who can help – like Phoenix Heating & Cooling
